A New Challenge and Opportunity for the Submarine Telecommunications Industry – Ocean Observatory Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
The ocean sciences are beginning a new phase in which scientists will enter the ocean environment and adaptively observe the earth-ocean system using innovative facilities called ocean observatories. This represents a new opportunity for the submarine telecommunications industry, but at the same time presents new challenges, in part because most of the principal design drivers for ocean observatories differ from those for commercial submarine telecommunications systems. This paper discusses the nature of ocean observatories and describes some of the design issues using the NEPTUNE regional cabled observatory as an example.

متن کاملCabled Ocean Observatory Systems
Future studies of episodic processes in the ocean and earth will require new tools to complement traditional, ship-based, expeditionary science. This will be enabled through the construction of innovative facilities called ocean observatories which provide unprecedented amounts of power and two-way bandwidth to access and control instrument networks in the oceans. The most capable ocean observa...
متن کاملThe NEPTUNE observatory as seismic warning system
It is proposed to install an underwater observing system off the coast of Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia in order to allow long-term scientific study of the ocean. The area to be covered corresponds to the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate. Electric power will be provided via a cable similar to a submarine telecommunications cable, and communications will be via fiber optics in t...
متن کاملA New Procedure for Deep Sea Mining Tailings Disposal
Deep sea mining tailings disposal is a new environmental challenge related to water pollution, mineral crust waste handling, and ocean biology. The objective of this paper is to propose a new tailings disposal procedure for the deep sea mining industry. Through comparisons of the tailings disposal methods which exist in on-land mining and the coastal mining fields, a new tailings disposal proce...

Abstract Background and Objectives The plasma industry started during World War II with the need for Plasma Derived Medicinal Products (PDMP). About 30 major plasma products are now commercially available, the most important of which are albumin, coagulation factors and immunoglobulin. Demand for these products is still growing, and these products have become particularly important not only in ...
